1. Failed water inlet valve:

Overview:

Water inlet valve is basically a part of your fridge. It is connected to the water supply of your household. Most commonly, it is present at the back of your fridge. Moreover, this component is controlled electrically.

The procedure works like this: whenever the ice maker is in need of water, the fridge will trigger-open the valve to let the water flow in. As soon as there is enough water, the fridge will close the valve.

Faults

A water valve can fail electrically and mechanically. Talking about the latter one, the valve can get corroded or clogged. Due to this it will open partially or not at all. As a result, the ice-maker will not receive water and there will be no ice.

Now talking about the former one, the valve can also experience a short circuit. In this case, the valve will not work even if the fridge triggers or signals it to do so.

Fix method

There is no other solution than replacing a faulty water inlet valve. Follow the below-mentioned steps.

  • Make sure the water supply is shut off
  • Now detach the inlet valve from the hose
  • Access the valve by removing the panel
  • Remove all the connected wires of the valve
  • Replace the old valve with a new one by attaching the wires in the same way like they were attached before

2. Clogged water filter

Overview

I have discussed how the water from the valve travels into the fridge. After the water flows into the fridge, it is passed through a water filter. The main purpose of a water filter is to remove all the impurities from the water and make it safe to drink. After the water has been cleaned completely, it will now flow into the maker.

Faults

Remember this thing that water filters are created for the purpose of making the water clean. It means that the impurities which are removed will stay inside the filters permanently. With the passage of time, the filters will be clogged with impurities so much that they will not allow even a single drop of water to pass through them. As a result, no water means no ice.

Fix method

You can clean a clogged water filter but a better approach would be to replace it with a new one.

  • First of all, shut off the water supply
  • Now find the water filters
  • Once found, remove the old filter
  • Replace it with a new one
  • Now check whether the problem has disappeared or not

4. Faulty ice maker

Overview

The third step in the process is the ice maker. First the water will reach the fridge through the inlet valve and then pass through the filters. After this, the water will finally reach the ice maker compartment where the ice-cube tray will be filled accordingly.

The compartment cools down to below freezing temperature in order to produce ice cubes. After a full tray has been made, the ice cubes are ejected into the storage bin. The same process gets repeated every time.

Faults

There are many possibilities to talk about in this area. First of all, the component might fail to sense the production of ice-cubes in the tray. If this happens, then another batch will not be produced.

Secondly, the arm which is responsible for ejecting the ice-cubes into the tray might become defective. As we know, the ice-maker is an electrical component so it might suffer from a short circuit as well.

Fix method

In case of a faulty ice maker you will have to replace it by following the below mentioned steps.

  • Turn OFF the refrigerator
  • Shut off the water supply
  • Now empty the fridge compartment to make it spacious for working
  • Unscrew the bolts which are holding the ice maker in its place
  • Gently pull out the maker
  • Detach all the connected wires
  • Take a new ice maker and attach wires to it in the same way as before
  • After this replacement, let the temperature of the fridge to be cool enough
  • Check if the fridge is working properly or not
